Namibia's inhabitants vary from hunter-gatherers, herders and farmers to an urban population with semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled people consisting of traders, industrialists, civil servants and individuals in a wide diversity of professions. They belong to 13 different cultural groups.

The Damara belong to one of the oldest cultural groups in Namibia. There is ample archeological evidence that the Damara have been keeping herds of stock for centuries. Today many Damara work on farms, in mines and in urban centers as teachers, clericals and officials.
